Clustering PLC

Meeting 5—ELL clusters and Culturally & Linguistically Diverse Learners (CLDL)

January 23, 2:15-3:35

SSHS’s Vision: Utilizing the best teaching practices, we will ensure that our students have the essential academic, ethical and workplace skills and knowledge to be successful in an ever-changing world.

Goals for PLC

  • Identify, utilize and share pre- and post- assessment tools in order to gauge what students know and can do.

  • Provide targeted, differentiation strategies to use with our ELL and GT clusters in the American Studies and English 9 classrooms.

  • Use common language to use when discussing and making decisions around clusters, differentiated instruction, and other aspects of our courses.

  1. Debrief: Independent Contracts

    • Jenny Gabriel’s follow-up on how student work for The Great Gatsby learning contracts concluded.

  1. How can we improve the educational experience for our CLD students? (This should, by default, improve the education experience for all of our students!)

  • Review CLDL lingo

  • Introduce conference and PEBC’s work

    • Read pgs. 6-9 in Building Words and Worlds

  • Community as a part of Building Words

    • Read page 12 in BW&W. As you read, ask yourself:

      • How do I already meet the bullets identified in the “As a teacher, I can:” section?

      • How do students in my class meet the bullets identified in the, “As a student, I can:” section?

      • What are some strategies or ideas for how to make these goals even more explicit in my teaching practices?

  • Belief

  • Answer the following question:

    • Based on my actions, what would my students say I believe?

      • Discuss

        • Do our actions reflect what we believe?

        • How do we know?

        • Could we answer this same question for our individual students?
