Common Core State Standards Initiative

Some thoughts on the Common Core from Marty Lamansky, our Director of Teaching & Learning:

  1. The national Common Core State Standards Initiative is curriculum that has been agreed to by 46 states.   It is currently infused into the Colorado Standards.  It only exists for Language Arts and Mathematics.  The Common Core does not exist as a separate entity in the Colorado State Standards.  It has been embedded into the standards documents.  When you look at the latest documents for the P-12 standards, you will find these in the “evidence outcomes” section and they are indicated by the symbol “CCSS.”
  2. Common Core State Standards are only in mathematics and English language arts (ELA).
  3. If we are aligned with Colorado Standards then we are also aligned with Common Core.  There is no need to go through a separate process.   We will need to continue to review curriculum to align it with whatever the most recent draft of standards are.
  4. As a district we discuss "guaranteed and viable curriculum," often referred to as our "common curriculum." This is the agreed upon curriculum in a grade level and subject area (e.g. 5th grade social studies, 7th grade math, or American Studies) that all teachers will teach in their classroom.  This is the curriculum that we, as a district, will guarantee that every student will have delivered to them regardless of what individual teacher the student may have.   It is not the entire curriculum for the grade level/content area but is the core curriculum that we want to have all students get and it is aligned with State Standards.
  5.  WIDA and Next Generation Science Standards are supposed to be aligned with standards according to CDE.

As a nation, state, and district, we are the midst of a major paradigm shift in teaching.   Every teacher is responsible for multiple aspects and content (e.g. 21st century skills, technology, literacy, numeracy, differentiation, etc.).

We have more work to do as a district to make sure we align to local, state and federal guidelines.  Stay tuned!
